Welcome From the Chairs

Welcome to the 2010 ASME Fluids Engineering Division Meeting (FEDSM2010) here in Montreal, Canada. The ASME Fluids Engineering Division sponsors this summer’s meeting jointly with participation by the European Mechanical Engineering Societies, the 8th International Conference on Nanochannels, Microchannels, and Minichannels (ICNMM), and the 7th International Symposium on Fluid-Structure Interactions, Flow-Sound Interactions, and Flow-Induced Vibration & Noise (FSI2 & FIV+N).

The new venue this year appears to have attracted considerable interest, in spite of an international economic downturn. Initially, 1027 abstracts were received from over 2000 coauthors representing 44 countries. As usual, this conference has attracted significant international interest. A special welcome is extended to our international participants.

The objective of this conference is to provide a forum for the exchange of information related to fluids engineering for engineers from around the world, who represent academia, industry, and government laboratories. The conference addresses a broad range of topics in analysis, numerical methods, and experiments in the areas of multi-phase flows, traditional fluid mechanics, experimental methods, industrial applications, microfluidics, nano-micro-mini-channels, fluid-structure interactions, flow-induced vibration & noise. The conference has a total of 144 two-hour sessions over four days of technical meetings with over 760 papers. Participants are invited to attend the technical committee meetings, which are responsible for the planning of future conferences. We welcome participants’ ideas for future technical sessions.

Additionally, the conference has five plenary lectures of one hour each sponsored by the technical committees and the ICNMM. The speakers include Prof. Harry Goldsmith, formerly of McGill University, Prof. Parviz Moin of Stanford University, Prof. Christophe Bailly of Ecole Centrale de Lyon (ECL) in France, Prof. Kemal (Kemo) Hanjalic of Sapienza University, Rome, Italy, and Dr. Paul Cooper of the Flowserve Corporation (retired). Furthermore, Prof. Michael W. Reeks of Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, is the 2010 Freeman Scholar Award recipient and will deliver the Freeman Scholar Lecture. Furthermore, many outstanding Keynote Speakers for the symposia and fora are featured in this program.

We are pleased that the Fluids Engineering Division, ICNMM, and FSI2 & FIV+N have joined forces to offer the participants one of the most comprehensive and exciting joint summer conferences ever. This partnership is expected to continue in the future. As many of you know, the ICNMM conference arose from a close knit group of microchannel researchers, many coming from the fields of heat transfer and boiling, and over the years has grown to include all manner of technologically important applications such as electrokinetics, lab-on-a-chip processes, and biosensors. It is exciting news to announce that the ICNMM conference is now integrated within the ASME’s Fluids Engineering and Heat Transfer Divisions. These divisions have agreed to host the conference in alternate years at US and international locations in the coming years.

It has been a pleasure collaborating with many wonderful colleagues from the European Mechanical Engineering Societies who worked closely with us to organize many symposia and fora at this conference. We are grateful to Drs. Jean Bataille of France, Martin Sommerfeld of Germany, Alfredo Soldati of Italy, Harry Hoeijmakers of the Netherlands, and Michael Reeks of UK.

Finally, Dr. David Halt’s, Technical Program Chair, hard work in arranging sessions and preparing the schedule is greatly appreciated. Special thanks are also extended to our volunteer organizers for this conference. The total number of organizers for the symposia and fora is approximately 138. We are very appreciative of the plenary, keynote speakers, and authors for agreeing to share their expertise and knowledge with us. Special thanks are also extended to the ASME staff: Erin Dolan, Conference Manager, Stacey Cooper and Annette Robinson of Technical Publications, Jacinta McComie-Cates and Lee Hawkins of Knowledge & Community, and Victoria Feliz who managed the Letters of Invitation.

With our very best wishes to the conference attendees,
